Benoit Charbonneau is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pure Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, cross-appointed in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and an affiliate at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. He holds a PhD from MIT (2004), with prior degrees from Université du Québec à Montréal (MSc 1999, BSc 1998). His academic roles include serving as Associate Dean Undergraduate Studies in the Faculty of Mathematics (2019–2023).
His research focuses on gauge theory, including Yang-Mills instantons, monopoles, moduli spaces, and the glass transition. Key interests span differential and algebraic geometry, with interdisciplinary work in physics and materials science. Recent grants include NSERC funding for gauge-theoretic moduli spaces and geometry of vector bundles.
Charbonneau has organized international conferences, edited journals, and led initiatives in academic governance. His teaching includes advanced geometry courses, and he advises PhD students in geometric analysis and mathematical physics. Collaborations extend to institutions like Duke University and McGill University, with contributions to theoretical physics and computational geometry.
