Benny Suryanto is an Associate Professor at Heriot-Watt University's School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society within the Institute for Infrastructure & Environment. His research focuses on advanced cementitious composites, structural durability, and sustainable concrete materials. He holds a PhD in Nonlinear Mechanics of Concrete from the University of Tokyo (2009) and has received multiple awards, including the 2018 Teaching and Learning Oscar and best paper awards from the Journal of Advanced Concrete Technology.
His research spans self-sensing cement composites, low-carbon concretes, and electrical property measurements for assessing material performance. Key projects include studying moisture movement in marine environments, bond strength of reinforcements, and nonlinear structural analysis. He manages advanced equipment like the Avery Denison 3000kN testing rig and has authored over 80 peer-reviewed articles.
Recent work emphasizes climate change impacts on concrete durability and innovations in high-speed railway infrastructure. He collaborates internationally, with expertise in digital image correlation and finite element modeling. His contributions align with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to infrastructure and climate action.
