Dr. Benjamin Taunay is an Associate Professor at the University of Angers (France), affiliated with the School of Tourism and Culture (ESTHUA) and a member of the CNRS UMR 6590 ESO research unit. His work focuses on societal transformations in China through tourism and leisure practices. He leads a research program on 'Sunbathing in China: An Emerging Body Norm?' and co-authored a major publication on global tourism trends. He represents the University of Angers on the scientific board of GIS Asia.
Education: PhD in Geography/Sinology (first French thesis on China's domestic tourism).
Research Interests: Chinese sociocultural change, tourism globalization, leisure practices, and body norms. His recent work explores how leisure activities reflect broader societal shifts in contemporary China.
Key Contribution: Pioneered studies on China's internal tourism dynamics, linking leisure trends to national identity and modernization. Current research bridges cultural geography and social anthropology to analyze emerging norms around sunbathing as a leisure practice in China.
