Benjamin Semple is Professor of Modern Languages and Literature at Gonzaga University, where he has taught since 1998. His expertise spans French language instruction from elementary to advanced levels and specialized courses in French/Francophone literature and civilization.
His academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Romance Languages from the University of Pennsylvania (1991) and a B.A. in French from Hamilton College (1983), complemented by studies at the Sorbonne and teaching experience at the University of Burgundy.
As a medievalist specializing in late Middle Ages French literature, Professor Semple's research centers on Christine de Pizan's works, examining intersections of virtue ethics, gender philosophy, and theological discourse. His scholarship reveals consistent focus on moral frameworks, body politics, and intellectual history within 14th-century French texts, particularly through analyses of Book of the City of Ladies and related dream-vision literature.
His publication trajectory demonstrates deepening engagement with Christine de Pizan's conceptual frameworks, evolving from early analyses of beauty phenomenology (1998) to recent pedagogical applications of virtue theory (2018), while maintaining core themes of gender, power, and medieval epistemology.
