Benjamin Olken is the TEPCO Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is a leading scholar in development economics, with a focus on improving public sector performance in developing countries, including governance, taxation, social protection programs, and environmental challenges.
Olken serves as Director of J-PAL (Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab), Co-Director of the NBER Development Economics Program, and Editor of the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics. His research spans political economy, public economics, and environmental economics, often utilizing randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate policy impacts.
His recent work includes studies on social protection in Southeast Asia, financial spillover effects of government transfers, and the economics of tropical deforestation. He has conducted extensive field experiments in Indonesia, examining issues such as corruption, informal taxation, and the effectiveness of electronic procurement systems.
