Benjamin Nanes

Benjamin Nanes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology and the Lyda Hill Department of Bioinformatics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. His lab focuses on the molecular basis of skin architecture and epidermal remodeling during wound healing, with specific interests in keratin intermediate filaments and the balance between epidermal stability and plasticity. He received his BA in Chemistry from Washington University in St. Louis, followed by an MD and PhD in Cell Biology from Emory University's Medical Scientist Training Program. He completed an internal medicine internship and dermatology residency at UT Southwestern, alongside postdoctoral research in systems biology.

Dr. Nanes practices general dermatology with a focus on inherited disorders affecting skin structural components. He is board-certified by the American Board of Dermatology. His research integrates systems biology approaches to study skin biology, leveraging both clinical and experimental models. Key projects explore keratin isoform dynamics, extracellular matrix organization, and advanced microscopy techniques for 3D cell analysis.

His publications highlight contributions to understanding cadherin endocytosis, keratin-driven signaling in wound healing, and mesenchymal lineage cell fate regulation. He leads a lab conducting interdisciplinary research at the intersection of dermatology and bioinformatics, with a focus on translational applications for skin repair mechanisms.

Dr. Nanes is affiliated with the Cecil H. and Ida Green Center for Systems Biology and maintains an active research program with collaborations in microscopy innovation and computational cell biology.
