Benjamin Metcalfe is Professor and Head of the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering at the University of Bath, where he also serves as Deputy Director of the Bath Institute for the Augmented Human. He holds external positions as Vice-President (Academic) of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine and Visiting Professor at Aalborg University's Centre for Neuroplasticity & Pain. His research spans neural engineering, biomedical devices, and neuromodulation technologies.
His educational background includes a Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering (2012-2016) and a Master of Engineering in Electronic & Electrical Engineering (2007-2012), both from the University of Bath.
Metcalfe's research focuses on neural recording and closed-loop neuromodulation with applications in restoring bladder control and developing biomimetic interfaces for upper-limb prostheses. His work integrates biomedical engineering with neural signal processing to create innovative medical technologies addressing challenges in peripheral nervous system interfacing, brain-computer interfaces, and sensory feedback systems. Current projects include Novel Wearable-based Stress Measurement, Age-inclusive technology for active ageing, and Evolving the Bionic Bladder. He serves as Principal Investigator on multiple grants focused on neural interfaces and biomedical technologies.
He leads research within the Centre for Bioengineering & Biomedical Technologies (CBio) and the Bath Institute for the Augmented Human, with laboratories focused on neural signal processing, peripheral nerve interfaces, and biomedical device development. His team collaborates internationally with institutions including Aalborg University and participates in the UKRI CDT in Accountable, Responsible and Transparent AI.
