Lisle's research focuses on the intersection of urban development and sports infrastructure, with particular emphasis on how stadiums shape and reflect American cultural values. His expertise spans Urban Studies, Cultural Geography, Built Environment analysis, Sports History, and Digital Humanities. His scholarly work examines how sports venues function as cultural landscapes that both respond to and drive urban transformation, particularly in the post-World War II era.
His publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly output with 15 significant works spanning from 2006 to 2024. These publications reveal a clear research trajectory examining the relationship between stadium construction and urban renewal, with particular attention to spatial power dynamics, cultural representation, and the evolution of sports infrastructure. His work increasingly incorporates digital humanities approaches, as evidenced by his involvement in the Digital Maine project.
- Modern Coliseum: Stadiums and American Culture (2017)
- Heartbreak City: Seattle Sports and the Unmet Promise of Urban Progress (2024)
- Modernizing the Mill Town: Space, Power, and Urban Renewal in Waterville, Maine (2023)
Lisle actively engages with interdisciplinary scholarship, as demonstrated by his conversation with photographer Gary Green exploring the relationship between landscape, memory, and cultural identity. His research methodology combines historical analysis with spatial theory to examine how built environments reflect societal values and power structures. As project coordinator for Digital Maine since 2016, he applies digital humanities approaches to regional history and landscape studies.
