Dr. Benjamin Kopek is an Associate Professor of Biology at Hope College since 2014. His research integrates advanced imaging techniques with molecular biology to study viral replication and host interactions. He teaches courses in Introductory Biology, Virology, and Honors Biology laboratories.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology, University of Wisconsin-Madison (2008)
- B.A. in Biochemistry, Spring Arbor University (2002)
Research Interests:
Focuses on molecular virology, particularly positive-strand RNA viruses, and employs cutting-edge microscopy techniques such as super-resolution fluorescence and correlative electron microscopy. Explores lipidomics in viral genome replication and host-pathogen interactions.
Awards & Grants:
- Towsley Research Fellowship (Hope College, 2017–2020)
- Kansas Lipidomics Research Center grant (2019–present)
Advising & Mentorship:
Mentors Hope students in biomedical research year-round. Over eight students under his guidance have presented at professional conferences. Trains students in experimental design and microscopy techniques.
Labs & Teams:
Conducts research in Hope College’s Department of Biology labs, focusing on viral replication and microscopy innovations.
