Benjamin Blackwell

Benjamin Blackwell is a Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Manchester. He completed his BA (hons) and MArch at Manchester School of Architecture, followed by professional practice, and earned his PhD in Architecture from the University of Manchester in 2022.

His research examines knowledge infrastructures, focusing on scientific/technological research buildings and secondary school design. Work intersects with STS, exploring how architecture shapes social practices and contributes to sustainable development goals.

Recent publications (2022-2025) show a dual focus: school architecture (as performative machines) and technoscientific infrastructures (for knowledge creation). His 2025 book details Manchester's campus history, while articles analyze spatial control in schools and research facility design.

He led the funded project \"Mapping spatial practices in smart schools\" (2021-2022) using ethnographic methods. Active in conferences (BERA, AAG, 4s) and the Manchester Architectural Research Group (MARG).
