Bendik Hellem Aaby is a Research Fellow at the University of Oslo's Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas within the Faculty of Humanities. His research focuses on philosophy of biology and action, particularly the role of behavior in evolutionary theory, agency attribution in non-human organisms, and teleological explanations within evolutionary frameworks. He holds a PhD from KU Leuven (Belgium) and previously served as a postdoctoral researcher there.
Key research interests include niche construction theory, organism-environment interactions in evolution, and the philosophical implications of ecological dynamics. His work bridges evolutionary biology, ecology, and philosophical inquiry into purposiveness and agency. Notable projects include participation in the 'Assembling Life' initiative.
Publications span topics like niche construction typologies, proximate-ultimate evolutionary distinctions, and ecological dimensions of natural selection. He contributes to interdisciplinary research groups such as the Oslo Mind, Language and Epistemology Network.
