Ben van Buren is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at The New School for Social Research, specializing in the perception of higher-level visual properties such as animacy, intentionality, and aesthetics. His research explores how visual cues influence attention, memory, and perceptual organization. He leads the NSSR Perception Laboratory and is on leave during Spring 2025.
Education: Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from Yale University and B.A. in Cognitive Science and Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania.
Research Interests: Perception of animacy and physical forces, aesthetic judgments, visual illusions, and the intersection of visual science with art. Recent work includes studies on attentional transplants, the perception of shininess via auditory cues, and distortions in facial age memory.
Professional Affiliations: Vision Sciences Society, Cognitive Science Society, Psychonomics Society, and Human Factors & Ergonomics Society.
Teaching: Offers courses on visual perception, aesthetics, and independent research across undergraduate and graduate levels at The New School.
