Ben Young is a Senior Lecturer in Film Production at the Department of Media, Humanities and the Arts within the University of Huddersfield's School of Arts and Humanities. His practice spans fiction, creative documentary, experimental cinema, and theatre, with works distributed across major film festivals, galleries, and streaming platforms. He is a member of EAVE, Rotterdam Lab, and Biennale College: Cinema, and serves as a talent mentor for the British Film Institute. His research explores intersections between experimental film forms and participatory culture.
Education: Doctor of Philosophy by Publication from the University of Huddersfield's School of Arts & Humanities.
Research Interests: Experimental narrative structures in film; the role of festivals in contemporary cinema; participatory culture in media production; and the intersection of digital technologies with traditional filmmaking practices. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to quality education and sustainable communities through innovative storytelling methods.
Recent creative outputs focus on streaming platform premieres and festival exhibitions, emphasizing themes like historical memory (The Wages of John Pernia), industrial decay (We Made Telephones), and environmental storytelling (Lode). These projects demonstrate a commitment to hybrid forms that challenge conventional cinematic boundaries.
Professional Activities: Organized the Videographic Entanglements Symposium (2023) and served as a peer reviewer for the Flatpack Film Festival (2024). Maintains active media engagement through interviews and critical commentary on film practices.
Labs/Teams: Member of the Centre for Participatory Culture and Centre for Experimental Practices (CXP) at the University of Huddersfield, fostering interdisciplinary creative research.
