Ben Watson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University (NC State), where he leads the Visual Experience Lab. His research explores how visual technologies impact human emotion, thinking, and behavior, spanning graphics, perception, design, and interaction. He has held academic positions at NC State since 2006, previously at Northwestern University (2006) and the University of Alberta (1997–2006). Watson earned his doctorate from Georgia Tech's Graphics, Visualization, and Usability Center (GVU), with additional studies in German language at Mannheim University and the Goethe Institute in Bonn.
His work has been applied in fields such as entertainment, security, finance, education, and medicine. Notable contributions include advancements in light field displays, esports visualization, and user interface design. He has co-chaired major conferences like Graphics Interface 2001 and IEEE Virtual Reality 2004, and serves on editorial and program committees. Watson has received awards including the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Award (2006) and the NVIDIA Professor Partnership Award (2007).
His research interests include procedural modeling, visualization techniques, and the intersection of human factors in high-interactivity systems. He has authored over 100 publications, including books like *Level of Detail for 3D Graphics* (2003) and edited conference proceedings. Current projects focus on real-time rendering, esports technology, and adaptive display systems.
Watson is actively involved in industry collaboration, with patents and pending disclosures in areas like mobile visualization and graph depiction. His lab’s interdisciplinary approach addresses challenges in HCI, graphics, and user experience design, aiming to bridge gaps between technology and human-centric applications.
