Dr Ben Warburton is a Lecturer in Film Studies and Film Production at the School of Arts, Media and Creative Technologies, University of Salford. With nearly a decade of experience in television and online media, including roles on BBC Music Day and high-end dramas, he transitioned to academia to pursue research and teaching.
His educational background includes:
- MA in Media Production (2017-2018) from the University of Salford
- PhD in Media and Communications (2019-2025) from the University of Salford, with a thesis titled "Alethic: An Exploration of the Relationship between Fake News and Ancient Myth, and their Shared Mechanisms of Behavioural Influence."
Ben's research centers on semiotic deconstruction of representations, particularly within queer theory and media discourse. He investigates misinformation propagation around queer representations, ideologies, mythologies, propaganda, psychoanalysis in cinema, transmedia storytelling, and structuralism. His work often employs practice-as-research methodologies, as exemplified by his PhD project which included creating fabricated documentaries to study behavioral influence.
His recent publications reflect a strong focus on LGBTQ+ media representation and academic community engagement. The 2021 conference presentation analyzed straightwashing in historical contexts and its manifestation in modern meme culture, while the 2022 SPARC conference book of abstracts highlights his role in fostering postgraduate research during the pandemic recovery phase.
Ben is actively involved in PhD supervision, welcoming topics related to his research interests. He teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate levels, leading modules in Critical Approaches, Film and Theory, and Final Film Projects.
