Professor Ben Murdin is a Professor of Physics and Head of the Photonics and Quantum Sciences Group at the University of Surrey's School of Mathematics and Physics. He holds a BA in Physics from Cambridge University, an MSc in Optoelectronics from Heriot-Watt University, and a PhD from Heriot-Watt University. His research focuses on experimental semiconductor physics, including electronic and optical properties under high pressure, magnetic fields, and THz spectroscopy. He coordinates UK users at the FELIX Free-Electron Laser in Holland and collaborates with institutions globally, such as Radboud University and the Paul Scherrer Institute.
Research interests include spintronics, quantum information devices, and THz-driven orbital control in silicon. He leads the Department's Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee and teaches courses in data handling and light-matter interactions. His work bridges 'applicable physics' between pure and applied domains, with applications in spintronic devices and quantum technologies.
