Ben Hodgson

Ben Hodgson is a Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Portsmouth's School of Film, Media, and Creative Technologies within the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries. With over thirty years of industry experience in broadcast documentary and drama production, he integrates practical filmmaking skills into teaching. His expertise spans cinematography, narrative storytelling, and collaborative filmmaking.

Education & Experience:
Joined academic staff in 2015 after a career spanning U.K. and U.S. television networks. Notable projects include:

• Director of Photography for BBC's The Gospel of John and the Luther docudrama
• Worked on Michael Caine's My Generation and Channel 4's Dispatches: Phone-hacking
• Collaboration with Garo Berberian on Taniel, an art film about the Armenian Genocide, featuring student involvement

Research & Teaching: Focuses on bridging academic theory with industry practice. Teaches units like Shooting Techniques, Cinematography & Sound, and Graduate Film. Advocates for hands-on learning through student involvement in professional productions.

Awards: ARPA Award for Return of the Tyke co-written with Garo Berberian.

Labs/Teams: Engages students in real-world projects, including collaborations with BBC and historical docudramas. Supervises undergraduate filmmakers on location and in production teams.
