Dr. Ben Fulford is the Deputy Head of Humanities, Cultures and Environment and Associate Professor of Christian Theology at the University of Chester's School of Humanities and Social Sciences. He specializes in ancient and modern Christian theology, with a focus on figures like Hans Frei and Gregory of Nazianzus, and themes such as postliberal theology, ethics, and trinitarian theology. He co-leads a project on sacred spaces and British imperial history with Chester Cathedral.
- PhD in Theology and Religious Studies from the University of Cambridge (2003–2007)
- MPhil and Diploma in Theology and Religious Studies (2002–2003, 2001–2002)
- BA (Hons) History from the University of Cambridge (1997–2000)
His research interests include theological interpretation of the Bible, early Christian theology, postliberal ethics, and political theology. He has published extensively on Hans Frei, Gregory of Nazianzus, and theological anthropology. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2013) and has supervised doctoral students on topics such as Karl Barth's theological anthropology and postliberal doctrine.
Recent work includes God's Patience and Our Work: Hans Frei, Generous Orthodoxy and the Ethics of Hope (2024) and co-leadership of projects exploring sacred spaces and imperial history. He serves on committees such as the Faith and Order Commission of the Church of England and the Society for the Study of Theology.
