Ben Ennis Butler is a Senior Lecturer in Design and Design Program Core Coordinator at the School of Design and Built Environment, Faculty of Arts and Design, University of Canberra. He holds a PhD from 2016 titled Escaping the search box: developing digital interfaces that encourage exploration and discovery, focusing on innovative visual interfaces for cultural heritage collections. His research emphasizes data visualization, web design, and exploratory digital tools for heritage collections, particularly in collaboration with institutions like the National Gallery of Australia.
Key projects include Heritage of the Air: how aviation transformed Australia, exploring aviation's historical impact, and Workplace Plasticity, addressing sustainable office design through robotic fabrication. Collaborative efforts include the ACT Creative Industries Research project analyzing regional creative sectors and the Difficult Conversations initiative fostering peacebuilding dialogue. He has presented at international conferences and exhibitions, showcasing works such as NCDC Unearthed and The Architectural Ghosts of Canberra.
