Ben Bratman is a Professor of Legal Writing and Coordinator of the Legal Writing Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. He specializes in legal writing pedagogy, incorporating applied improvisation to enhance communication skills. His work includes pioneering the use of standardized patients from Pitt’s medical school to simulate client interactions. Bratman has received the Robert T. Harper Excellence in Teaching Award and was named Distinguished Public Interest Professor in 2021.

Research Interests: Applied Improvisation, Legal Writing, Legislation & Regulation, Employment Law, Bar Exam Reform, and Legal Education. His publications address teaching methodologies, bar exam reform, and curriculum design. He has contributed to the Best Practices for Legal Education blog and presented at conferences on topics like improv in legal education and regulatory law course requirements.
He serves as faculty advisor to the Pitt Legal Income Sharing Foundation and previously advised the Moot Court Board. Before joining Pitt in 2002, he clerked for a magistrate judge, practiced law in Atlanta, and taught at SUNY Buffalo Law School. He also served as a Visiting Professor at McGeorge School of Law in 2011–2012.
