Ben Bays is an Associate Professor of Instruction and Area Head for Digital Media/Animation in the Department of Radio-Television-Film at the Moody College of Communication, The University of Texas at Austin. A native of Austin and UT graduate, he joined the faculty in 2008 after over a decade in the video game industry.
His research expertise spans:
- Animation and Motion Graphics production for film/TV/games
- Immersive Media development (VR/AR)
- 3D environment design and virtual world creation
- Game art pipelines across consoles (PS2, XBOX) and mobile platforms
- Visual Effects and digital modeling workflows
Bays pioneered curriculum in new media storytelling, teaching courses from traditional animation to cutting-edge immersive media production. His industry background informs hands-on instruction in virtual world development—from concept art to lighting simulations—with emphasis on emerging technologies. He has led VR/AR initiatives within the department since joining the faculty.
Professional experience includes progression from level artist to art lead on projects spanning Gamecube, GBA, iOS, and PC platforms, specializing in destructible environments and 2.5D platformers.
