Ben Atkinson is an Assistant Professor of Natural Sciences at Flagler College, based in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His primary research focuses on the conservation ecology of turtles and tortoises, with a particular emphasis on endangered species such as the Central American River Turtle and the Diamond-backed Terrapin. He holds a Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation from the University of Florida, along with advanced degrees in Interdisciplinary Ecology and Environmental Education.
Dr. Atkinson teaches a wide range of courses, including Environmental Science, Marine Biology, Evolutionary Biology, and field-based research methods in Belize. He is actively involved in conservation efforts through affiliations with organizations like the Diamondback Terrapin Working Group and the Turtle Survival Alliance. His work bridges paleontology and modern conservation, using fossil records to inform current species management strategies.
In addition to his scientific contributions, Atkinson is an accomplished poet, with published works in literary journals and textbooks. His poetry often explores themes of nature and science, reflecting his dual passion for biology and creative writing. He maintains regular office hours on campus and is known for his commitment to undergraduate education and hands-on field research training.
