Prof. Belle Derks is a Professor at Utrecht University's Department of Social, Health and Organisational Psychology. She holds the chair 'Psychological Perspectives on Organisational Behaviour within Institutions' and chairs the Kurt Lewin Institute, the national graduate school for social psychology. Previously, she served as member and president (2018–2020) of the Young Academy (KNAW).
Education: MA (2001, cum laude) and PhD (2007) in Social Psychology from Leiden University. Postdoctoral work included fellowships at the University of Toronto and University of Colorado. Appointed to Utrecht University in 2015 after roles as Assistant (2008) and Associate (2013) Professor at Leiden University.
Research focuses on social (in)equality, particularly gender disparities, Queen Bee effect, stigma, and work-family conflict. Uses lab experiments, field studies, and physiological methods (EEG, cardiovascular measures). Collaborates across disciplines (sociology, economics, law). Key contributions include challenging the 'female QB' stereotype, analyzing gender norms' impact on task divisions, and critiquing academia's 'superhero' success model.
Grants include NWO VENI (2008), VIDI (2015), and NWA (2022). Awards include the 2007 SPSSI Dissertation Award. Active in public engagement, publishing op-eds on gender bias and delivering lectures on inclusive academia.
Labs/teams: Groups and Identity Lab. Current projects include an NWA-funded Living Lab addressing work-family norms via interventions for first-time parents.
