Elisabeth Bel is a Full Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the Academic Medical Centre (AMC), University of Amsterdam, and holds concurrent roles as a University Medical Specialist at Leiden University Medical Centre. She served as Head of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at AMC until 2018 and led the European Respiratory Society (ERS) as its President from 2013–2016. Her academic career spans over three decades, including a PhD (cum laude) from Leiden University in 1990, followed by clinical and research roles in respiratory medicine.
Her research focuses on severe asthma phenotypes, biomarkers, and translational strategies, with leadership in EU initiatives like UBIOPRED and the ERS Clinical Research Collaborative. Key achievements include founding the Multidisciplinary Centre for Asthma and Allergy at LUMC and advancing precision medicine approaches in chronic airway diseases. She has received prestigious awards, including the Jeffrey Drazen Visiting Professorship (2016) and the European Respiratory Society Fellowship (2014).
Elisabeth Bel’s work integrates clinical practice and molecular research to address unmet needs in asthma management. She collaborates extensively with international networks, emphasizing patient-centered approaches to refractory asthma. Her contributions have been recognized through her editorial roles, including Associate Editor of the European Respiratory Journal, and her impactful peer-reviewed publications.
