Behrooz Mirafzal is a Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Kansas State University, holding the Louie T. Marshall Engineering Professorship and George Yeh Keystone Research Scholar position. He earned his B.S. from Isfahan University of Technology (1994) and Ph.D. from Marquette University (2005), both in Electrical Engineering.
His research focuses on power electronic applications in renewable energy systems, on-the-move technologies, and micro-grids. Key areas include design/analysis of single-stage boost inverters for solar/wind systems, fault-tolerant inverters for electric vehicles, and control strategies for micro-grid stability.
He established the Power Electronics Research Laboratory and leads the SPECS Research Group, developing technologies like Grid-of-Nanogrid testbeds and smart three-phase converters. His NSF-funded projects enhance grid resiliency with photovoltaics.
Awards include:
- NSF CAREER Award (2014)
- IEEE-PES Best Paper (2012)
- Rockwell Automation Innovation Award (2006)
Mirafzal authored the textbook Power Electronics in Energy Conversion Systems, holds four U.S. patents, and has published over 100 IEEE papers.
