Dr Becky Thomas is a Senior Lecturer in Population Health and Medical Sciences at Swansea University Medical School within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science. She holds dual roles as Informatics Lead for the Diabetes Research Unit Cymru and Co-programme Director for the MSc Diabetes Practice course. With 8 years at Swansea University, she earned her PhD from Cardiff University School of Medicine in 2015, focusing on diabetic retinopathy epidemiology and screening interval optimization using parametric survival analysis.
Her research expertise spans diabetic retinopathy, screening methodologies, data analytics, and systematic reviews. Key areas include optimizing diabetes-related retinopathy screening intervals, evaluating healthcare outcomes of diabetes complications, and leveraging machine learning for early disease detection. She has contributed to studies on lower limb amputation trends, hypoglycaemia impacts, and pandemic-era diabetes education via social media.
Dr Thomas has secured grants including a Boehringer Ingelheim-funded evaluation of diabetes medications and a St David’s Medical Foundation project developing 3D retinal models. Her work emphasizes translating data into actionable public health strategies, particularly in Wales. She collaborates nationally and internationally on diabetes surveillance and digital health solutions.
Teaching responsibilities include foundational health data modules, diabetes management courses, and global health perspectives. She advises a current project on optimizing referrals from diabetic eye screening programs. Her research portfolio reflects a balance between clinical epidemiology and innovative data-driven healthcare solutions.
