Becca Selden is an Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at Wellesley College specializing in marine ecology. Her research examines how fishing and climate change alter marine ecosystems and human communities, using field, observational, and quantitative approaches to analyze historical changes and management interventions.
Education:
- B.A., Bowdoin College
- Ph.D., University of California-Santa Barbara
Research Focus: Dr. Selden investigates food web dynamics under climate-fisheries stressors, ecosystem recovery potential, and social-ecological adaptation. Her work integrates interdisciplinary methods to address conservation challenges in marine environments, with emphasis on New England ecosystems as living laboratories.
Policy Engagement:
- Testified before U.S. House Sub-committee on Water, Oceans, and Wildlife (May 2019)
- Panelist on marine restoration at Capitol Hill Ocean Week (June 2019)
- UN presenter on interdisciplinary ocean solutions (June 2019)
Teaching: Instructs Organismal Biology (BISC 111), Statistics in Biosciences (BISC 198), Marine Biology (BISC 210), and Climate Change Impacts seminar (BISC 310/ES 310). Developed NPR's Science Friday Shifting Fishes game to enhance STEM engagement through active learning in environmental problem-solving.
