Kathryn Sobocinski is an Associate Professor in the Department of Marine and Coastal Science at Western Washington University. She advises students in marine ecology and coastal science, with an office in ES 345 (MS9181). Her research focuses on juvenile fish ecology, coastal ecosystem resilience to human impacts, and the application of statistical and individual-based models to ecological challenges.
Education: PhD in Marine Science (College of William & Mary/Virginia Institute of Marine Science), MS in Aquatic and Fishery Sciences (University of Washington), and BA in Environmental Studies (Connecticut College).
Research emphasizes juvenile fish habitats, human disturbance effects (e.g., urbanization, climate change), and ecosystem modeling. Her work has addressed salmon survival in the Salish Sea, jellyfish aggregations, and the impacts of ocean acidification on Pacific herring embryos. She directs the Coastal and Marine Fish Ecology Lab, fostering transdisciplinary approaches to coastal management.
Notable projects include the Whidbey Basin salmon habitat restoration study and assessments of urban stressors in marginal marine ecosystems. Her contributions to the State of the Salish Sea report underscore her role in synthesizing large-scale ecological data for policy applications.
