Beatrice Bodart-Bailey

Beatrice Bodart-Bailey is a Professor at The Australian National University's School of Culture, History & Language. She holds a PhD from ANU and is an Emeritus Professor at Otsuma Women's University in Tokyo. Her research specializes in pre-modern Japanese history, comparative culture, and European-Japanese cultural exchange, with a focus on Engelbert Kaempfer and the Tokugawa period. She has authored eight books, including Kaempfer's Japan: Tokugawa Culture Observed and The Dog Shogun: The Personality and Policies of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi.

Education: MA and PhD from ANU. She taught at Kobe University (1997-1999) and contributed to establishing Otsuma's Faculty of Comparative Culture. Her work includes translating Kaempfer's manuscripts and researching Japanese history through European perspectives.

Her publications analyze cultural exchanges, European perceptions of Japan, and Tokugawa-era governance. Current projects include an English biography of Engelbert Kaempfer. She has been honored with a personal audience with the Emperor of Japan for her Kaempfer research.
