Dr. Beate Peter is an Assistant Professor of Cultural Sociology at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Arts. Her work focuses on popular music, urban policy, and youth engagement, with a particular interest in intangible heritage and subcultural dynamics. She leads the School Transition Project (2023–present), using Hip Hop to support marginalized youth, and oversees the Lapsed Clubber Audio Map, a co-created digital archive of Manchester's rave scene heritage. Additional roles include Co-Editor of Popular Music History and Coimbra-RUG Representative for heritage initiatives.
Research Projects include analyses of music in youth criminal justice systems (Hip Hop and Home, 2020–2022), rave culture's impact on adulthood transitions, and the intersection of music with urban policy. Her teaching spans courses like Arts and Wellbeing and Cultural Leadership, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches.
Key publications address topics such as youth voice in music projects, GDR music historiography, and the role of dance in political contexts. Funded projects total over €63,000, including grants from Manchester City Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Supervised PhD projects explore underground electronic music's spatial politics, music's role in Arab Spring protests, and libertarian digital communities in Poland/Czech Republic. She actively engages with community partnerships, blending academic research with practical social interventions.
