Beata G. Vertessy

Beáta G. Vertessy serves as Full Professor and Head of the Department of Applied Biotechnology at Budapest University of Technology and Economics since 2011 and 2015 respectively. She concurrently holds a position as Group Leader and Scientific Research Advisor at the Institute of Enzymology, Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 2001. With a distinguished career spanning over three decades, Professor Vertessy has established herself as a leading expert in nucleotide metabolism and genome integrity research.

Professor Vertessy's research primarily focuses on nucleotide pool imbalance, dUTPases and cytidylyltransferases, and genome integrity mechanisms. Her work explores the double role of uracil in DNA, nucleo-cytoplasmic trafficking, and the physiological consequences of nucleotide pool imbalances. She employs structural biology techniques including X-ray crystallography and solution methods to investigate enzyme mechanisms. Her research extends to infectious microorganisms such as Mycobacterium, Plasmodium, and Staphylococcus, with implications for understanding malaria, tuberculosis, and bacterial pathogenesis.

Analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent focus on dUTPase enzymes, their role in genome integrity, and applications in infectious disease research.
