Başak Boz is a Professor in the Department of Archaeology at Trakya University's Faculty of Letters, where she has served since February 24, 2023. Previously, she was an Associate Professor (2017-2023) and Assistant Professor (2009-2017) at the same institution. She earned her academic foundation with a Bachelor's degree in Paleoanthropology from Ankara University (1992), a Master's in Anthropology from Hacettepe University (1998), and a PhD in Anthropology from Hacettepe University (2006).
Dr. Boz specializes in bioarchaeology with particular expertise in osteology, dental micro-abrasion analysis, and Neolithic burial practices. Her research primarily focuses on Anatolian archaeological sites including Çatalhöyük, Beycesultan, and Gökçeada/Uğurlu. She has developed significant methodological approaches combining FTIR, SEM-EDX, and calorimetry techniques to analyze burned human remains. Her work bridges biological anthropology with archaeological interpretation, particularly examining how human skeletal remains can reveal social behaviors and cultural practices of ancient societies.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on Neolithic and Chalcolithic Anatolia, with particular attention to burial customs, paleodietary reconstruction, and the analysis of commingled skeletal remains. She has increasingly incorporated feminist and queer theoretical perspectives into her bioarchaeological analyses, expanding the interpretive frameworks available for understanding ancient social structures through human remains.
Dr. Boz actively contributes to the field through numerous research projects examining human skeletal remains from various Anatolian sites including Çatalhöyük, Beycesultan, Gökçeada/Uğurlu, and Ekşihöyük. Her work spans international collaborations and has resulted in publications in high-impact journals such as Antiquity, Journal of Archaeological Science Reports, and Documenta Praehistorica.
She teaches a comprehensive range of courses including Bioarchaeology, Osteology I & II, Grave Archaeology I & II, Anthropology, Social Anthropology, and Human Evolution, demonstrating her broad expertise across both biological and cultural anthropology. Her teaching reflects her research interests, providing students with both theoretical knowledge and practical analytical skills in skeletal analysis.
