Başak Akkan is an Associate Professor in the Department of International Relations at Istanbul Bilgi University, where she teaches courses such as Introduction to Political Science, State and Society, Public Policy in Times of Crisis, Social Policy, Politics of Gender, and History of Social Thought. Her academic work is deeply rooted in interdisciplinary social sciences with a focus on equity, care, and policy.
Her research interests include social policy, gender politics, care theory, child well-being, and European justice frameworks. These are reflected in her active participation in international scholarly networks and projects. She applies a critical and comparative lens to public policy, especially during crises, and explores the gendered dimensions of care and civil society.
Başak Akkan has contributed significantly to transnational research through her involvement in the EU Horizon 2020-funded ETHOS project on European theories of justice and fairness. She also serves as an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Care and Caring, highlighting her leadership in care-related scholarship.
