Professor Bayram Yılmaz is a distinguished faculty member at Yeditepe University's Faculty of Medicine, Department of Physiology. He holds the academic rank of Professor and has made significant contributions to the fields of physiology, neuroscience, and endocrinology. His research spans multiple disciplines including neuroendocrinology, reproductive physiology, and the thermodynamic aspects of biological systems.
Professor Yılmaz received his doctoral degree from the University of Glasgow's Medical School, Institute of Physiology in 1997, with a dissertation titled "The role of endogenous opioids and brain neurotransmitters in the generation of the LH surge in the rat." His undergraduate education was completed at Fırat University's Veterinary Faculty in 1986.
His research interests focus on the intricate relationships between neuroendocrine systems and physiological processes. Professor Yılmaz has extensively studied melatonin's neuroprotective effects, kisspeptin's role in reproductive physiology, and the impact of endocrine-disrupting chemicals on human health. His work bridges basic science with clinical applications, particularly in understanding energy homeostasis, metabolic regulation, and the thermodynamic principles underlying physiological processes. He has pioneered research on asprosin, cannabinoids, and other neuropeptides in feeding behavior and reproductive functions.
Analysis of Professor Yılmaz's recent publications reveals a strong trend toward interdisciplinary research that combines neuroscience, endocrinology, and thermodynamics. His work increasingly focuses on hypothalamic neuronal circuits, particularly AgRP and POMC neurons, in regulating feeding behavior and energy homeostasis. He has made significant contributions to understanding melatonin's neuroprotective mechanisms and developing novel approaches to neurodegenerative conditions. His research on obesogens and environmental toxins demonstrates growing concern with how modern environmental factors impact metabolic health.

Professor Yılmaz has supervised over 40 master's and doctoral students, demonstrating his commitment to academic mentoring. He has led numerous research projects funded by TÜBİTAK and university grants, with total funding exceeding 1.5 million Turkish Lira. His administrative roles have included serving as Institute Director, Deputy Dean, and Department Chair at Yeditepe University. He also served as the founding General Secretary of the Turkish Health Institutes Presidency from 2016 to 2019.
Professor Yılmaz leads a dynamic research group that includes neuroscientists, physiologists, and biochemists working together on cutting-edge projects related to neuroendocrinology, metabolic regulation, and environmental impacts on health. His laboratory employs advanced techniques including optogenetics, fiber photometry, and molecular biology approaches to investigate hypothalamic neuronal circuits and their roles in physiological regulation.
