Prof. Dr. Bastian Popp is a full Professor and Chairholder of Business Administration, especially Retail Management, at Saarland University. He leads the Institute for Retail & International Marketing (H.I.MA.) since July 2017, succeeding Prof. Joachim Zentes. His academic work is centered at the intersection of retail innovation, digital transformation, and sustainable business models in commerce.
His research focuses on key areas including E-Commerce, Multi-Sided Digital Markets, Sustainability in Trade, Value Co-Creation, Pricing, Brand Management, Customer Loyalty, Service and Quality Management, and Sports Commerce. These interests are pursued through empirically grounded, practice-relevant studies, often in collaboration with industry partners like bevh.
Prof. Popp actively contributes to academic discourse by presenting at leading conferences such as the Recent Advances in Retailing & Consumer Sciences (RARCS) and the Doctoral Colloquium in Management Science. He supervises numerous student research projects, seminars, and theses, fostering academic development at both bachelor’s and master’s levels.
He teaches core courses such as Strategic Management, Business Models and Value Creation in Digitalized Commerce, Online Marketing & Online Retailing, and Market Research II (Structural Equation Modeling). His teaching emphasizes interactivity, empirical methods, and real-world application.
Prof. Popp leads a dynamic research team at H.I.MA., engaging in competitive strategy development, cooperative manufacturer-retailer relationships, distribution structures, and go-to-market strategies across industries. The institute maintains strong national and international research collaborations, ensuring high academic visibility and impact.
