Bastian Pfleging

Bastian Pfleging is a Professor of Ubiquitous Computing and Smart Systems at the Institute of Computer Science, Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany. His research focuses on designing intelligent systems that support users without compromising their situational awareness, particularly in the context of automated and connected mobility.

His research interests lie at the intersection of human-computer interaction and ubiquitous computing, with a strong emphasis on automotive user interfaces. He investigates how users interact as passengers in automated vehicles, how novel interior designs can support non-driving activities, and how external human-machine interfaces (eHMIs) can facilitate communication between automated vehicles and other road users. His team also explores sustainable mobility solutions, such as the design and implementation of cargo bike rental systems in the SteigtUM! project.

Bastian Pfleging is actively involved in the scientific community, serving on the Steering Committee of the AutomotiveUI conference series and holding leadership roles in major HCI conferences including CHI, Mensch und Computer, UIST, and PerDis. He has previously held academic positions at Eindhoven University of Technology, the University of Stuttgart, and LMU Munich, and has industry experience at BMW Technology Office and DB Autozug GmbH.

He holds a diploma in Applied Computer Science from TU Dortmund University and a doctorate in Computer Science from the University of Stuttgart and the Cluster of Excellence for Simulation Technology.
