Prof. Bastiaan Krom is a Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Preventive Dentistry at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). His expertise lies in molecular microbiology, particularly fungal-bacterial interactions in the oral cavity. He holds a PhD from the University of Groningen and completed postdoctoral training at Georgetown University Medical Center. Krom's research employs advanced in vitro models to study biofilm dynamics and host-tissue interactions. He teaches microbiology, cariology, and biofilm infections across multiple institutions including ACTA, VU Amsterdam, and Utrecht University. He leads the MetaHealth research project addressing children's oral health and microbiome relationships. Krom serves on editorial boards for Biofilm and Odontology, and actively participates in academic activities like organizing Eurobiofilms 2017.
His research focuses on Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, and Porphyromonas gingivalis interactions, exploring their roles in oral infections and pathogenesis. Recent work includes developing novel culturing media and 3D organotypic models to study host-microbe relationships. Teaching innovations include curriculum reforms for dentistry students emphasizing interdisciplinary skills and active learning.
