Bassem BARKIA

Bassem Barkia is an Associate Professor at Arts et Métiers Institute of Technology since January 2022, affiliated with the PIMM Laboratory's CoMet research team. He also teaches metallurgy and materials engineering courses at CNAM (Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers). His work bridges fundamental materials science with industrial applications in nuclear and advanced manufacturing sectors.

His research centers on Additive Manufacturing processes, plasticity mechanisms, and micromechanical behavior of metals, with particular expertise in liquid metal embrittlement phenomena. He investigates how interstitial elements affect titanium's mechanical properties and studies crack propagation in stainless steels exposed to liquid metals like sodium and mercury. His approach combines in situ TEM, mechanical testing, and multiscale modeling to unravel deformation mechanisms at multiple length scales.

Recent publications demonstrate consistent output in top materials journals, with a clear trajectory from titanium micromechanics (2015-2017) toward additive manufacturing and liquid metal embrittlement challenges (2020-2022). His work shows strong alignment with nuclear industry needs through CEA Saclay collaborations.

Professor Barkia currently supervises two PhD students on ANR-funded projects while co-mentoring previous advisees through completion. His active grants (ANR ASTRID DUCTILITÉ and NOCOLOX) provide substantial resources for experimental work at PIMM's advanced facilities, including laser processing systems and material characterization platforms.

As leader of the Behavior and Microstructure of Metals Lab within PIMM, he directs research utilizing specialized equipment for in situ mechanical testing and microstructure analysis. The lab's strategic focus addresses critical challenges in next-generation manufacturing and nuclear materials performance.
