Professor Bas Bloem is a consultant neurologist and Professor of Neurological Movement Disorders at the Radboud University Medical Centre, Netherlands, where he directs the Center of Expertise for Parkinson's & Movement Disorders. He co-founded ParkinsonNet, a national network of 4,000+ care providers, and leads the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour's Medical Neuroscience Community.
- Education: Medical degree and PhD from Leiden University (1993-1994)
- Training: Movement disorders fellowships at The Parkinson's Institute (California) and Queen Square (London)
His research focuses on Parkinson's disease, with two main pillars: (1) cerebral compensatory mechanisms for gait/balance disorders and (2) healthcare innovation through patient-centered collaborative care. Recent work explores environmental toxin exposure, lifestyle interventions, and AI-driven wearable sensor analysis.
With over 1,000 publications and an h-index of 128, his work has been recognized through multiple awards, including the Stevin Prize (2022) and Joannes Juda Groen Senior Award (2024). He has served on the board of ZonMw (2009-2017) and as co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Parkinson's Disease (2020-present).
Bloem has supervised 68 PhD students, including 7 cum laude graduates, and leads interdisciplinary teams at Radboudumc. His research has received international acclaim, with Expertscape ranking him as the world's top Parkinson's expert (2020-2024) and inclusion in Clarivate's top 1% most-cited scientists (2021).
