Barton John is an Ordinary Member of the Academy of Europe under Philosophy, Theology & Religious Studies, elected in 2024. He is currently a Senior Research Fellow at Campion Hall, Oxford, following a distinguished career as the Oriel & Laing Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture (1991-2014) and earlier roles at St Cross College and Merton College.

Research interests span Biblical studies, hermeneutics, historical theology, Classical Hebrew, and ethics in religious contexts. His scholarly work focuses on the interpretation of Holy Scripture and historical theological debates.
Awards & Honors include the Duff Cooper Prize, Fellowship of the British Academy, and multiple honorary distinctions. He played significant roles in academic administration, including founding the Oxford-Bonn Theological Seminar in 1977 and serving on editorial boards.
