Barton H. “Buzz” Thompson, Jr. is the Robert E. Paradise Professor of Natural Resources Law and a Professor at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. He is a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and founded the Environmental and Natural Resources Law & Policy Program at Stanford Law School. Thompson holds a BA (1972) and JD/MBA (1976) from Stanford University.
His research focuses on improving resource management through legal, institutional, and technological innovation, with expertise in water law, climate change policy, and sustainable development. He previously served as Special Master for the U.S. Supreme Court in Montana v. Wyoming and chairs the boards of the Resources Legacy Fund and Stanford Habitat Conservation Board.
Thompson’s awards include the 1993 John Bingham Hurlbut Award for Excellence in Teaching. He advises on water policy, serves on the Science Advisory Board of the EPA, and is a consultant to an impact investment fund. His publications span legal casebooks and policy analyses addressing water resources, endangered species law, and environmental governance.
