Bart Smeets is an Assistant Professor (tenure track) at the Department of Biosystems (BIOSYST) within the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at KU Leuven. He leads the Subdivision MeBioS Technologies-BS and is a member of the iSi Health and Leuven One Health institutes. His research focuses on biofilm mechanics, tissue engineering, and synthetic cell systems, combining experimental and computational approaches. He supervises multiple interdisciplinary projects addressing antimicrobial resistance, biomaterials, and mechanobiology.
Dr. Smeets teaches courses such as 'Mechanics of Solid Materials' and supervises master's theses in biosystems engineering and human health engineering. His work integrates biomechanical modeling with biological systems, as seen in studies on fruit tissue mechanics and magnetic biofabrication techniques. Recent publications explore biofilm architecture impacts on antibiotic resistance and novel methods for bone regeneration through bioengineered implants.
He actively contributes to academic governance as a senior member of the Faculty Council and curriculum committees. His research portfolio includes projects funded by KU Leuven and collaborative initiatives, emphasizing translational applications in health and agriculture.
