Prof. Bart J Kooi is a Full Professor and Chair of the Nanostructured Materials and Interfaces research group at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Science and Engineering. He leads a team of ~8 PhD students and collaborates with industry partners like NXP and IBM. His work focuses on nanomaterials, electron microscopy, and phase-change materials. Kooi holds a PhD from Delft University of Technology (1995), where he won the Agricola Medal, and has published over 240 peer-reviewed articles.
- Education:
- 1985-1990: MSc in Materials Science, Delft University of Technology
- 1991-1994: PhD in Materials Science, Delft University of Technology
- Thesis: 'Iron-Nitrogen Phases: Thermodynamics, Long-Range Order and Oxidation Behaviour'
His research explores nanostructure-property relationships in materials such as chalcogenides, antimonides, and metal hydrides. Notable achievements include first-time atomic imaging of hydrogen in metal hydrides and pioneering studies on reversible oxygen migration in ferroelectric devices. Kooi chairs the EPCOS conference and received the 2021 Ovshinsky Lectureship Award.
Recent articles highlight advancements in neuromorphic electronics, lithium-sulfur batteries, and photoinduced material dynamics. His work bridges fundamental materials science with industrial applications.
- Awards:
- Agricola Medal (1995)
- Ovshinsky Lectureship Award (2021)
As group leader, Kooi oversees advanced electron microscopy facilities and advises PhD students on topics like phase-change materials and nanoscale characterization. His research group actively collaborates with both academic and industrial partners.
