Prof. dr. Bart Dessein is a Full Professor at Ghent University's Department of Languages and Cultures, where he leads the research group ‘East Asian Culture in Perspective: Identity, Historical Consciousness, Modernity’. He holds a PhD in Oriental Languages and Cultures from Ghent University (1994). Additionally, he serves as Vice-Director of the School for Comparative Philosophy (Antwerp), Honorary Professor at Liaoning University, Guest Professor at Shanghai University, and President of the European Association for Chinese Studies (since 2016).
His research explores modern and contemporary Chinese history, political philosophy, and New Confucianism, with emphasis on geopolitical strategy, cultural identity, and international relations. Publications frequently analyze China's evolving role in global governance and domestic policy frameworks.
Recent articles (2022-2025) focus on China's diplomatic strategies, Communist Party dynamics, and responses to global power shifts, with recurring themes of sovereignty pragmatism, multipolarity, and ideological narratives. Methodologies blend historical analysis with contemporary policy evaluation.
