Barry Shrage serves as Professor of the Practice in the Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program at Brandeis University and is Affiliated Faculty at the Maurice and Marilyn Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies. He joined Brandeis following his 2018 retirement as president of Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston after 30 years of leadership.
His educational background includes:
- MSW from Boston University
- BA from City College of New York
Shrage's research centers on Jewish identity, community engagement, and leadership development. He spearheads the Initiative for Jewish Identity (IJI) at the Cohen Center, examining historical and contemporary Jewish identity to build evidence-based community programs. His work emphasizes social justice, interfaith outreach, support for Israel, and inclusive engagement across religious and secular Jewish communities.
At Hornstein, Shrage mentors future Jewish professional leaders while developing the IJI to create measurable impact on Jewish communal life. His strategic focus bridges academic research with practical community application through creative partnerships and large-scale program development.
