Barry Scholnick is a Professor and Eldon Foote Chair in International Business at the Alberta School of Business, University of Alberta. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and specializes in Household Finance, Business Economics, and International Business. His research focuses on consumer finance, bankruptcy dynamics, and financial decision-making, with notable contributions to journals like the Journal of Financial Economics and Review of Financial Studies.
He has secured nine SSHRC grants totaling over CAD $1.2 million, including projects on debt renegotiation, peer effects, and financial markets. Scholnick has also been recognized with multiple teaching awards, including the MBA Association Teaching Award (2021, 2017) and the MacKenzie Undergraduate Teaching Award (1997, 1999). He serves as a Visiting Scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and an External Academic Consultant at the Bank of Canada.
His recent work explores strategic default in financial crises, debtor income manipulation, and the cyclicality of pricing strategies. Scholnick’s research bridges theory and policy, with implications for consumer protection, financial regulation, and economic stability.
