Barry Sanders is a Professor and Director of the Institute for Quantum Science and Technology at the University of Calgary. He holds additional roles as Distinguished Chair Professor at the University of Science and Technology China and Vajra Visiting Faculty at the Raman Research Institute in India. His academic journey includes a BSc from the University of Calgary (1984), a Diploma of Imperial College (1985), and a PhD from Imperial College London (1987).
His research focuses on quantum-limited measurement, quantum algorithms, nonclassical light, and optical implementations of quantum information tasks. Sanders is a Fellow of multiple prestigious institutions, including the Royal Society of Canada and the Optical Society of America. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the New Journal of Physics (2015–2020) and held editorial roles in Physical Review A, Optics Communications, and Mathematical Structures of Computer Science. His professional leadership includes past roles as President of the Australian Optical Society and Co-Chair of the Canadian Association of Physicists’ Division of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics.
Sanders’ contributions to quantum science have been recognized through honorary degrees and fellowships, reflecting his global influence in theoretical and applied quantum research.
