Dr. Barry Pryor is a retired Professor in the Department of Plant Protection & Pathology at the University of Arizona's School of Plant Sciences. His research focuses on fungal biology, plant pathology, and environmental mycology, particularly studying Alternaria species' roles in crop diseases and human allergies. He holds a B.A. in Biology from UC Santa Cruz and advanced degrees in Plant Pathology and Integrated Pest Management from UC Davis. Dr. Pryor has contributed to over 40 peer-reviewed publications since 2001, addressing topics like fungal biocontrol strategies, phylogenetic analysis of Alternaria, and aflatoxin degradation.
His teaching includes courses such as PLP 305 Introductory Plant Pathology and PLP 150C Mushrooms, Molds, and Man. Research interests span biological control methods for plant pathogens, fungal species boundaries, and the ecological impacts of Alternaria on respiratory health. Collaborative projects include studying microbial communities in Kartchner Caverns and CRISPR/Cas9 applications in filamentous fungi.
Papers highlight innovative work on endophyte-based Fusarium wilt control, mouse models for fungal asthma, and first reports of Alternaria species in diverse agroecosystems. His work bridges basic mycology with applied agriculture and public health, emphasizing desert-adapted fungal systems.
