Barry Linnane

Dr. Barry Linnane is a Paediatric Respiratory Consultant and Director of the Paediatric Cystic Fibrosis Programme at University Hospital Limerick, with an adjunct appointment as Clinical Lecturer at the University of Limerick. His research focuses on early lung disease in cystic fibrosis, paediatric respiratory infections, and newborn screening programmes.

His primary research interests include cystic fibrosis pathophysiology, broncho-alveolar lavage surveillance, lung microbiome in young children, and sweat testing methodologies. He established Ireland's first BAL surveillance program for preschool CF patients.

Dr. Linnane has published extensively on cystic fibrosis management, including studies on ivacaftor treatment outcomes, microbial epidemiology, and newborn screening effectiveness. His MD thesis investigated early pathophysiological changes in infants with CF.

He serves on multiple national committees including the Scientific Advisory Committee of the CF Registry of Ireland and chairs working groups for newborn screening programmes. His clinical work focuses on improving outcomes for paediatric CF patients.
