Barry Hettler is an Associate Professor in the School of Accountancy at Ohio University's College of Business and serves as Director of Graduate Assurance of Learning (AOL). He holds a PhD in Accounting from Kent State University, an MS in Accounting from SUNY Brockport, and a BS in Accounting from SUNY Brockport. Prior to academia, he worked as an internal auditor at Xerox Corporation and as an auditor/tax preparer at DeJoy, Knauf, and Blood, LLP in Rochester, NY. He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in New York State.
His research focuses on dual-class firms, financial analysts' behavior, earnings quality, cost of capital, and valuation. Key areas of investigation include insider ownership dynamics, corporate social responsibility linkages, and audit quality demands in complex ownership structures. His work bridges theoretical accounting frameworks with practical industry applications, particularly in automotive and financial sectors.
Recent publications (2015-2024) explore topics like analyst coverage trends, credit default swap market reactions, and governance mechanisms in dual-class firms. His 2023 study on declining sell-side analyst coverage highlights emerging market information asymmetries. Methodological strengths include innovative use of accounting data in financial modeling and cross-industry analysis.
